Governor Peter Mbah appears set to clinch the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State following a massive turnout of party members during the party’s governorship primary election held across the state on Thursday.
The exercise, which took place simultaneously in all 260 wards across the state, witnessed large participation by party faithful who gathered to affirm support for the governor, who emerged as the sole aspirant for the APC governorship ticket ahead of the next election cycle.
Although collation of results was still ongoing at the time of filing this report, indications from across the local government areas showed overwhelming support for Mbah’s candidacy, with party members openly endorsing him for a second term based on what they described as his impressive performance over the past three years.
The atmosphere in several wards across the state was described as peaceful but highly energetic, as supporters turned out in large numbers carrying party banners, posters and chanting solidarity songs in support of the governor.
At Owo Ward in Nkanu East Local Government Area, where Governor Mbah personally participated in the exercise, party faithful reportedly gathered in their thousands to receive him.
The ward venue became a major focal point of the exercise as members enthusiastically endorsed the governor when the primary election panel asked delegates and party members to affirm his candidacy.
The panel, which comprised Prince Arinze Arum, Mrs Ngozi Eni and Barrister Osinachi Nnajieze, reportedly put the question before members, who responded with a thunderous “yes” in support of Mbah’s candidacy.
The resounding endorsement was seen by political observers as a strong indication of the governor’s growing influence within the APC structure in the state.
Supporters at the venue praised Mbah’s administration for what they described as remarkable achievements in infrastructure development, economic reforms, education, healthcare and security since assuming office.
Many party members said the governor had demonstrated visionary leadership and deserved another opportunity to consolidate ongoing projects and policies initiated by his administration.
Several stakeholders within the party also described the primary election as peaceful, transparent and reflective of the collective will of APC members across the state.
Party leaders commended members for their orderly conduct during the exercise and urged them to remain united ahead of the general election.
Political analysts noted that Mbah’s emergence as sole aspirant reflected a broad consensus within the party and suggested increasing confidence in his leadership among APC stakeholders in Enugu State.
Observers further pointed out that the large turnout recorded during the exercise underscored the governor’s popularity and the mobilisation strength of the APC structure across the wards.
Speaking after participating in the exercise, some party members expressed optimism that Mbah’s continued leadership would accelerate development and strengthen the state’s economic transformation agenda.
Others highlighted ongoing road construction projects, investment drives and urban renewal programmes as reasons for their support for the governor’s second-term ambition.
The primary election also attracted party officials, local leaders, youth groups and women organisations who gathered to witness the process in different parts of the state.
Security personnel were deployed across strategic locations to ensure smooth conduct of the exercise and maintain order throughout the voting and collation process.
Although no major incidents were reported during the exercise, party officials maintained close monitoring of activities across the wards to ensure compliance with the party’s guidelines.
The APC leadership in the state praised members for their commitment and peaceful participation, describing the primary as a demonstration of internal democracy and party unity.
Stakeholders also called on members to sustain the momentum and begin mobilisation efforts ahead of the governorship election proper.
Political commentators believe Mbah’s expected emergence as APC candidate could further reshape the political landscape in Enugu State, especially as political parties intensify preparations for the next electoral contest.
The governor’s supporters insist that his administration has laid a strong foundation for economic growth and modernisation in the state, while opposition voices are expected to challenge his record as campaigns gradually gather momentum.
As collation of results continues, indications strongly suggest that Governor Peter Mbah is on course to formally secure the APC governorship ticket with overwhelming support from party members across Enugu State.
