A housewife in an Enugu community is currently fighting for her life following a brutal attack by her husband, Sunday Echegi, who cut off her hand in a heinous act of domestic violence at Ibagwa-Ani, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The victim, identified simply as ‘Mrs Echegi’, Daily Query gathered, was rushed to Ketochukwu Hospital in Nsukka, where she received emergency care for her injuries.
The appalling incident took place on Sunday this week – January 26 to be precise – leaving residents of the community horrified, even embarrassed, by the unbelievable act of brutality, with many calling for justice for the victim.
Eyewitnesses said the couple had been engaged in a heated argument when the husband suddenly dashed into the house, retrieved a machete, and attempted to strike his wife’s head, whereupon the woman raised her hands to shield herself, resulting in one hand being completely severed and the other badly injured.
The suspect who was promptly, Daily Query gathered, has been detained at the Nsukka Police Divisional Headquarters, Nsukka, where he is helping operatives with investigation.
Miffed by the incident, Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Jude Asogwa, who has visited Echegi at the hospital to assess her condition and express solidarity, condemned the brutal attack of a wife by her husband, describing it as a barbaric act that should have no place in society.
The victim was earlier this morning – today, Tuesday, January 28 – transferred to the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu for proper treatment.
