Justice Musa Kakaki of a Federal High Court, Lagos, convicted and sentenced a 40 year old-man, Sanusi Lawali, to three years imprisonment for trafficking 25.4 kilograms of cannabis Sativa popularly called marijuana.
The convict was given the jail-term, after he pleaded guilty to a count charge made against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The prosecutor, J. O. Negedu, had told the court that the convicted man was arrested with the banned weed, on August 24, 2024, on the Lagos Ibadan Express Way, Lagos State, during a motorized patrol by the agency.
She told the court that the illegal act of the convict was contrary to section 11 (c) of the National Drug punishable Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004, and punishable under the same Act.
Based on the convict admission of guilt, facts reviewed by the prosecutor, the exhibits tendered, the the allucutor made by Barrister Oreofe Ogunleye, Justice Kakaki sentenced the convict to three years imprisonment.
The judge however held the the convict’s jail-term commences from the date of his arrest.
Charge Against the convict reads: “that you, Sanusi Lawali, Adult, Male, 40 years old on or about the 27th day of August, 2024 during a motorized patrol within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, without lawful authority dealt in 25.4 Kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic drug similar to Cocaine, Heroin and LSD and thereby committed an offence as provided for and punishable under section 11 (c) of the National Drug punishable Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004.” (newsdishnh).
