The convict when he was arrested
A 25 years old man, Faruk Mumuni, has been convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment for unlawful trafficking and dealing in 153.5 Kilogrames of Cannabis Sativa, popularly called marijuana, by a Federal High Court, Lagos.
Justice Deinde Dipeolu passed the sentence on the convict, after he pleaded guilty to a two count-charge made against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The convict was arrested with the prohibited weed alongside his mother, on August 13, 2025, at Mushin area of Lagos State.
Upon the conclusion of investigation, his mother was freed by the agency,and he was charged to court in a charge marked FHC/L/755c/2025.
At the hearing of the charge today, the prosecutor, Barrister Buhari, Abdullahi, informed the court that the convict was arrested with the prohibited weeds weighing 149 Kilogrames and 4.5 Kilogrames.
He told the court that the action of the convict, contravened section 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, and punishable under the same Act.
The defendant admitting committing the offence and pleaded guilty to the charges.
Based on his plea, the prosecutor, Barrister Abdullahi, after reviewing the facts of the charge and tendered exhibits in the charge, urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
However, the convict’s lawyer, Emmanuel Uchenna Okenyi, pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy in sentencing his client.
Okenyi in his allucutor, told the court that his client is a first time convict, who did not have any record of previous conviction. Adding that he had vowed not to go back to crime if given second chance.
He therefore pleaded with the court to give his client an option in lieu of custodian sentence.
Justice Dipeolu after confirming from the prosecutor Okenyi’s submission, sentenced the convict to three years imprisonment.
The judge however ordered the convict to pay N50 million fine in lieu of the imprisonment.
Charges Against The Convict Reads: “That you Faruk Mumuni, Male, 25 years old on of about the 13th August, 2025 at Mushin, Lagos State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court without lawful authority dealt in 149 kilograms of cannabis Sativa, narcotic drug similar to cocaine, heroin and LSD and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
“That you Faruk Mumuni, Male, 25 years old on or about the 13th August, 2025 at Mushin, Lagos State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court without lawful authority dealt in 4.5 grams of cannabis sativa, narcotic drug similar to cocaine, heroin and LSD and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
