A wave of fresh, highly coordinated attacks launched by allied jihadist fighters and separatist Tuareg rebels hit multiple towns and a high-security prison across Mali early Saturday morning, according to the military junta, local residents, and security sources.
​The heavy fighting, which erupted around 5:00 AM (0400 GMT), marks a sharp escalation in the volatile Sahel nation. This latest offensive comes just over two months after the same insurgent coalition launched a devastating assault that partially decapitated the ruling military government.
​Security sources report that the dawn offensive was carefully timed, striking several strategic hubs across the country simultaneously. The primary locations targeted in Saturday’s attacks were the Gao and Anefis; Key northern hubs where heavy exchanges of gunfire and explosions were reported near military installations.
Another location attacked was Sévaré, a strategic central town that has frequently served as a frontline base for the Malian armed forces and their international allies.
Insurgents launched a direct assault on the Kéniériba penitentiary facility, though authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of any inmate escapes or casualties.
​The renewals of hostilities follow an unprecedented security crisis late April, where the same unified front, composed of the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) successfully breached the junta’s deepest strongholds.
​That previous offensive resulted in the death of Mali’s powerful Defense Minister, General Sadio Camara, who was killed in a suicide car-bombing at his residence in the garrison town of Kati.
The April attacks also severely wounded the junta’s head of state security, General Modibo Koné, and forced the country’s military ruler, General Assimi Goïta, to rely heavily on heightened security protocols amid a temporary withdrawal of Russian-backed Africa Corps paramilitaries from certain northern sectors like Kidal.
​”The attackers are demonstrating a sophisticated level of tactical coordination that directly challenges the junta’s grip on power,” a regional security analyst noted on the condition of anonymity.
​The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) stated that operations are currently underway to neutralize the attackers and restore order in the affected zones. No official death toll has been released regarding Saturday’s multi-front clashes.
