Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has rejected allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accusing him of duplicating the recovery process of the $310 million Abacha loot, which later grew to $322.5 million with interest.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by his media aide, Mohammed Doka, Malami dismissed the accusations as “baseless, illogical and wholly devoid of substance,” maintaining that he acted strictly within the law and followed due process throughout the recovery efforts.
The former minister confirmed that he was invited by the EFCC on November 28, 2025, to respond to queries bordering on alleged abuse of office and money laundering linked to the repatriation of the funds looted by the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha.
According to the statement, Malami honoured the invitation and provided investigators with the necessary clarifications.
Doka noted that Malami found the allegations surprising, insisting that the recovery of the Abacha funds under his watch was carried out transparently and in accordance with established protocols approved by the federal government and international partners.
“The former Attorney-General wishes to emphasize that at no point did he duplicate any process, engage in wrongdoing, or act in a manner contrary to Nigeria’s laws,” the statement added.
Malami urged the public to disregard what he described as a deliberate misrepresentation of facts, expressing confidence that the ongoing investigation would vindicate him.
The EFCC has yet to issue further updates on the probe.
