Thirty- three persons have been confirmed to have survived the Bayelsa boat mishap which claimed 20 lives, even as facts have emerged as to how refuelling of the boat while in motion caused the explosion which led to the death of the victims.
Sources at the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy stated that the Commissioner, Dr Faith Zibs had engaged survivors to ascertain the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
 Officials said the discussions were crucial to address immediate concerns and form part of the report to be submitted to the State government.
 Fresh investigations have revealed that the recklessness of the boat driver was the immediate cause of the accident.
 According to sources, the boat which was carrying 62 passengers did not have adequate fuel before setting sail from Ezetu in Southern Ijaw Local Government to Yenagoa, the State capital.
 It was while in the middle of the River that the driver attempted to refill diesel into the engine which he stored in a nylon bag.
However, because of the waves, the nylon got torn and its contents spilled into the running engine and caused the explosion.
  An official in the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy stated that all reports regarding the conduct of the driver and other non-compliance with safety measures are going to be compiled and presented to the state government. Â
Meanwhile, the secretary to the state government, Prof Nimbofa Ayawei has said the boat accident should be a lesson in the importance of safety on the waterways.
‘’This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of safety in all aspects of our lives. Boat operators must prioritize safety above all else, adhering to strict safety protocols and regulations to ensure the well-being of their passengers. This includes regular maintenance of vessels, provision of life jackets, and proper training for crew members,” he said.
‘’Safety is not just a matter of compliance with regulations, but also a personal responsibility that demands consciousness and caution. We must all be mindful of potential hazards and take proactive steps to mitigate risks. In this case, a tragic loss of life could have been prevented had safety measures been in place.
‘’Let us learn from this devastating incident and make a collective commitment to prioritize safety in all our endeavours. We owe it to ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities to ensure that such tragedies are avoided at all costs,’’ he said.
