Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) marketers have set an ambitious target to raise Nigeria’s annual LPG supply to six million metric tonnes in the coming years as part of efforts to promote the adoption of cleaner energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The outgoing President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), Oladapo Olatunbosun, announced the target on Tuesday during the association’s 38th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Abuja.
Olatunbosun, who reviewed the growth trajectory of the LPG sector, noted that despite challenges such as high import costs, infrastructure gaps, and inconsistent policy implementation, the industry had witnessed significant expansion in recent years.
He said, “Nigeria has made remarkable progress in LPG utilisation, but we must do more to achieve energy transition goals.
Our plan is to increase national supply to six million metric tonnes annually through strategic partnerships, investments in storage facilities, and advocacy for supportive government policies.”
The NALPGAM president urged the Federal Government to create a more enabling environment for local investors by addressing issues related to import duties, forex access, and domestic production constraints.
He also called for greater public enlightenment on the benefits of switching to LPG as a safer and environmentally friendly energy source.
Olatunbosun commended stakeholders and operators in the downstream gas value chain for their contributions to market development, adding that continued collaboration between government and private players was key to achieving the new supply target.
He further expressed optimism that with improved infrastructure, regulatory stability, and increased local production, Nigeria could emerge as one of Africa’s leading LPG markets and significantly reduce carbon emissions from traditional cooking fuels.
