The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has ordered the closure of all garages and motor parks operating along the Mazanmaza, Ojo to Orile corridor over persistent violations of environmental sanitation and waste management regulations.
The enforcement action, carried out by LAWMA’s Environmental Enforcement Unit, followed a series of complaints and formal petitions from residents who accused operators and users of the facilities of indiscriminate dumping of refuse within the area.
According to the Authority, the activities of the affected garages and parks led to the defacement of road setbacks, medians, street junctions and drainage channels, posing serious environmental, public health and traffic safety risks across the corridor.
Investigations further revealed that the operators failed to register with LAWMA-accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, a clear breach of existing environmental sanitation laws and operational guidelines governing waste disposal in Lagos State.
LAWMA noted that the enforcement became inevitable after several warnings, sensitisation programmes and statutory notices issued to the operators were repeatedly ignored.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reiterated the Authority’s commitment to maintaining environmental orderliness and sustainability across the state.
He stated that no garage, motor park or commercial facility would be allowed to operate outside the framework of the law or jeopardise the environmental wellbeing of residents.
Dr. Gbadegesin stressed that the sealed facilities would remain closed until full, verifiable and sustained compliance with all environmental requirements is achieved, including compulsory registration with LAWMA-approved PSP operators and strict adherence to approved waste disposal practices.
He also warned that LAWMA would continue to intensify enforcement against individuals and organisations undermining the state’s waste management system, emphasising that environmental protection is a shared civic responsibility.
The Authority urged residents, market operators, transport unions and commercial establishments to cooperate fully with PSP operators and comply with waste management laws in order to promote a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
