The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has backed resident doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, calling on the Oyo State Government to resolve mounting welfare grievances and critical staffing shortages before the impending August 28, 2026 strike deadline.
The ultimatum follows an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) held by the local chapter, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, where doctors evaluated the status of an eight-week grace period granted to state authorities on June 27, 2026.
The local chapter leadership, led by ARD President Dr. Adedapo Mustapha and General Secretary Dr. John Stephen, noted that despite suspending earlier industrial action in “good faith” to maintain public healthcare access, critical issues remain unaddressed.
In a joint statement issued from Ogbomoso, the union highlighted several unresolved demands full implementation of Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) release, and passage of the underlying legislation into law.
They also demand the Immediate implementation of the revised Professional Allowance table and payment of outstanding 2025 accoutrement allowance arrears and the Settlement of minimum wage arrears and upgrade arrears owed to eligible doctors.
Union demanded safe working conditions and urgent rehabilitation of doctors’ call rooms to guarantee safer, humane working conditions.
Beyond financial obligations, NARD emphasized that LTH Ogbomoso faces a severe shortage of medical personnel, leaving the remaining workforce overstretched and subjected to frequent, prolonged call duties.
”The hospital is experiencing gross manpower shortages, while the inability to attract and retain resident doctors is further worsened by the prevailing welfare conditions.
This is not merely a matter of doctors’ personal comfort. The welfare of healthcare workers is intrinsically linked to patient safety, quality of care, and the sustainability of healthcare services.” quoted in ARD LTH Ogbomoso Statement.
To mitigate the workload crisis, NARD and the local ARD executives urged the state government to conduct an immediate, transparent national recruitment exercise to hire additional resident doctors and medical officers.
NARD urged the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, alongside the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, to intervene and engage in good-faith negotiations before the deadline.
NARD warned that if state authorities fail to resolve these demands by August 28, 2026, the doctors will resume full industrial action, with the potential for broader nationwide solidarity from the parent association.
