The Lagos State Government has appealed to the academic unions of Lagos State University (LASU) to suspend their ongoing strike and return to the negotiation table for the resolution of outstanding issues.
In a statement on Monday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Tokunbo Wahab, said the state government remains committed to addressing the grievances raised by the unions but stressed that industrial harmony is critical to the smooth running of the institution.
Wahab noted that the strike, which has disrupted academic and administrative activities on campus, could adversely affect students’ learning schedules and the university’s academic calendar if allowed to linger.
“We understand the concerns of the academic unions and we are not ignoring them. However, we appeal for a suspension of the strike so that constructive dialogue can continue without the disruption of academic activities,” Wahab stated.
He assured that the government is already engaging relevant stakeholders, including the university management and union leaders, to find a mutually acceptable resolution, adding that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to improving the welfare of staff and enhancing infrastructure in the institution.
The unions, comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), had embarked on an indefinite strike to press for improved working conditions, payment of outstanding allowances, and other demands.
Students have expressed concerns over the prolonged industrial action, with many calling on both the government and unions to find common ground to avoid further disruption of their studies.
