The Lagos State Government has issued a final ultimatum to all building owners, developers, and facility managers to register and certify their elevators and vertical transportation equipment (VTE) by March 31, 2026.
​This move, announced by the Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), follows a series of safety incidents, including a recent widely publicized case where residents were trapped in an elevator in Banana Island.
Elevators, escalators, and all other vertical transportation systems also applies to residential, commercial, and public buildings across the state.
Starting April 1, 2026, the state will begin a “state-wide crackdown.” Non-compliant buildings face being sealed and their elevators decommissioned.
The reason is to prevent avoidable accidents and ensure that all lifts meet minimum safety standards as the city sees a rise in high-rise developments.
​The government has streamlined the process through a digital platform to make registration easier for property owners. Building owners would visit www.lasgsafetyreg.com to register their equipment.
New installations must be inspected and certified before they are commissioned for public use. Existing elevators must undergo safety audits to receive a valid safety
certificate.
The Director-General of the Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, also urged the public to act as “safety ambassadors.” Residents and office workers are encouraged to report faulty elevators, poor maintenance, or unregistered lifts through the Commission’s dedicated safety hotlines.
