The Lagos State Government has issued a one-week final grace period to estate developers operating without approved layout plans to regularise their planning documents or face stiff sanctions.
The directive was delivered on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, during an on-the-spot warning and sensitisation exercise across parts of the Eti-Osa corridor.
Dr. Olumide explained that the latest warning followed the expiration of an earlier grace period granted to flagged estates to comply with planning regulations. He said several developers had continued construction despite lacking the mandatory layout approvals required under Lagos State’s urban development laws.
According to the commissioner, the state government would no longer tolerate unregulated estate growth, which he said often leads to environmental hazards, infrastructural pressure, and disputes over improper land allocation. “We are giving this final one-week grace as a last opportunity,” Olumide said.
“Any estate that fails to regularise its layout plan within this period will be sealed, and the developers will face appropriate sanctions.” During the sensitisation tour, several estates were cautioned, while others already on the government’s watchlist were directed to report immediately to the ministry for documentation review.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state’s commitment to orderly, safe, and sustainable urban development, stressing that compliance with planning standards was non-negotiable. Residents and property buyers were also advised to verify the planning status of any estate before making financial commitments to avoid future losses or legal complications.
