The Association of 57 LGAs and LCDAs in Lagos State, Conference 57, held a two-day workshop on Monday to boost staff productivity and revenue generation.
The News Agency of Niger reports the training, with the heme ‘Fiscal Administrative Due Process and Enhanced Internal Revenue Generation’, drew chairmen, auditors, procurement officers and department heads.
Mr Sesan Olowa, Chairman of Conference 57, said council leaders must deliver good governance at the grassroots.
“We are the third tier of government, and there is now greater emphasis on transparency and accountability.
“As local government chairmen, our major responsibility is to deliver good governance to the grassroots.
“The conference decided to build capacity to ensure due process and add value to citizens through proper procurement and accountability.
“We will ensure value for money. This is one of several training workshops we are organising,” he said.
Olowa, also Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki LCDA, said participants included chairmen, council managers, internal auditors and heads of procurement.
“The overall goal is to ensure councils perform well, deliver mandates and operate within the law.
“This is the first in a series. We have a timetable for more workshops, and other officials will benefit subsequently,” he said.
He added that chairmen would undergo further leadership and management training to improve service delivery.
Mr Sanni Okanlawon, House Committee Chairman on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, described the training as “excellent” and beneficial.
“This programme promotes transparency, accountability and due process in governance.
“We hold public resources in trust and must remain transparent and accountable in discharging our duties,” he said.
Mr Adebayo Olasoju, Chairman of Isolo LCDA and Conference 57 PRO, described the workshop as impactful and engaging.
He said: “This is one of the best training sessions for productivity and efficiency.
“We must not betray public trust. The sessions are interactive and highly educational.
“The takeaway is improved performance and recognition of Lagos councils in service delivery.”
Olasoju said Lagos councils were delivering large-scale projects, including hospitals, roads and sports facilities.
“Compared to other states, Lagos stands out because of effective systems and governance,” he said.
Mr Layi Giwa, Council Manager, Bariga LCDA, said the training would enhance productivity and service delivery.
He said: “This sets a benchmark for other councils nationwide.
“We expect improved service delivery after this training and will uphold government standards.”
Giwa added that the workshop would strengthen due diligence and adherence to rules at the grassroots.
“We commend the organisers and urge that such training should be sustained regularly,” he said.
