That’s a big move for the Labour Party (LP), and it seems they are doubling down on what they consider a “winning formula” in Abia State. As of early May 2026, the Labour Party has officially announced that Governor Alex Otti will receive the party’s 2027 governorship nomination form free of charge. This is a significant gesture of support, especially considering the party has set the price for other governorship aspirants at N50 million.

The LP National Working Committee (NWC) decided to waive the expression of interest and nomination fees for Governor Otti, recognizing him as the party’s only elected governor and a “shining light” for their performance-based branding.

This comes alongside the release of the LP’s official timetable for the 2027 elections. While the presidential form has been priced at N100 million, Otti’s exemption is a clear signal of the party’s desire for continuity in Abia.

By offering a “free ticket,” the party leadership aims to reward loyalty and performance, effectively clearing the path for Otti to seek a second term without internal financial hurdles.

The move isn’t just about money; it’s a strategic shield against the growing competition in the state. The All Progressives Congress (APC), led by figures like Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, has been vocal about taking over Abia in 2027.

After a period of internal leadership tussles (notably between the Julius Abure faction and the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee), the party is using Otti’s candidacy to project a front of stability and unity.

While the form is free, democracy still technically requires a process. Governor Otti himself has maintained a diplomatic tone, stating that the party remains open to all qualified members, but this “free form” gesture essentially confirms him as the presumptive nominee.
