The Kwara State Government has revealed plans to introduce an emergency toll line designed to enhance rapid response to crises and accidents across the state. The initiative, now at an advanced stage, aims to centralize emergency reporting and improve coordination among first responder agencies.
The announcement came in a statement issued on Tuesday by Abeeb Oredunni, the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Communications. The development was also highlighted by the State Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, during a meeting with officials of the National Orientation Agency, led by Zonal Coordinator Priscilla Gondoalour.
Speaking at her office, Olukoju explained that the emergency toll line is being designed to integrate key first responder agencies, ensuring that citizens can access coordinated assistance promptly in the event of fire, accidents, health emergencies, or security incidents.
“The toll line will integrate critical agencies, including the State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigerian Police, State Ambulance Services, and the State Emergency Management Agency, to ensure prompt and coordinated emergency interventions,” she said.
The move is expected to streamline communication between the public and emergency services, eliminating delays that often occur when multiple agencies operate independently. By connecting all first responders under a single point of contact, the government anticipates a significant reduction in response times, which could save lives and property.
Officials noted that the initiative aligns with the state’s broader efforts to leverage technology for public safety and improve citizen confidence in government services. The integration of agencies will also allow for better tracking, data collection, and strategic deployment of resources during emergencies.
Residents and community leaders have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a timely measure that could transform emergency response and disaster management in Kwara State.
The State Ministry of Communications assured that further details, including the toll-free number and operational protocols, would be released shortly ahead of the official launch. This initiative positions Kwara among a growing number of states in Nigeria adopting innovative solutions to modernize public safety and emergency management.
