As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, leaders and indigenes of Kwara North residing in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have renewed their demand that the next governorship seat be ceded to the zone.
The group argued that their request was driven by the principles of fairness, justice, and equity, noting that since Nigeria’s return to democratic governance in 1999, no individual from Kwara North has governed the state, unlike other senatorial districts which have had opportunities to produce governors.
The appeal was made by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Baatonu Unity and Development Association Abuja (BUDIA), Alhaji Yusuf Tunku, during the end-of-year dinner hosted by the women’s wing of the association.
Tunku emphasized that the persistent exclusion of Kwara North from the state’s top leadership position has created a sense of political imbalance. He maintained that ensuring power rotation to the zone in 2027 would strengthen unity, deepen inclusion, and give every region a fair stake in the state’s political evolution.
He also urged political parties, stakeholders, and opinion leaders across Kwara State to support the call, stressing that zoning the governorship to Kwara North would not only promote equity but also inspire greater confidence in the democratic process.
Members of BUDIA and other indigenes present at the event echoed similar sentiments, appealing for collective support in making the long-awaited aspiration of the zone a reality in the upcoming election cycle.
