Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent wave of killings in Kwara State, describing the attacks as tragic and a stark failure of the Nigerian state.
Obi, in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, said he was deeply saddened by reports that gunmen attacked several communities in the state, including Woro and Nuku, killing about 150 people.
The former Anambra State governor expressed condolences to the families of those affected, as well as to the government and people of Kwara State, noting that the scale of the violence was disturbing.
“Every loss of innocent life is tragic, and these killings represent a major failure for us as a nation,” Obi wrote.
He lamented the recurring cases of violence across different parts of the country, warning that Nigeria’s insecurity situation had deteriorated to a level worse than what obtains in some war-torn nations.
According to him, the persistent bloodshed underscores the urgent need for decisive and coordinated action to address insecurity, stressing that the protection of lives must remain the primary responsibility of any government.
Obi’s reaction comes amid growing public outrage over rising attacks in rural communities across the country, with calls for stronger security measures and accountability from authorities.
