Former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the party.
Kwankwaso made the announcement in a statement dated March 29, 2026, saying his decision takes immediate effect.
According to him, the move is part of a broader political realignment in response to the shifting dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape.
He thanked the party for the opportunity to serve as its National Leader and presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections, noting that leaving was not an easy decision.
Kwankwaso, however, said the current direction of national politics makes it necessary for him to align with a platform he believes offers a better chance to pursue meaningful change.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said.
Explaining his decision to dump the NNPP even while thanking the party for the courtesies of being its 2023 presidential candidate and national leader, he said:
“considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”
His exit is expected to trigger fresh political calculations ahead of future elections, as attention turns to his next move.
