Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris announced on Monday, July 28, 2025, that his administration has allocated ₦6.5 billion in the 2025 budget for the renovation of primary and secondary schools and the provision of furniture across the state’s 21 local government areas. Speaking at the opening of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) National Executive Council meeting in Birnin Kebbi, Idris emphasized his commitment to education, revealing an additional ₦2.7 billion for free textbooks and teaching materials, bringing the total education investment to ₦9.2 billion. The governor, a former NUT national president, also highlighted the state’s free education policy and improved boarding school feeding, increased from ₦175 million to ₦300 million, to ensure students remain in school.
Idris’s education reforms, including hiring 2,000 new teachers and raising their retirement age to 65, have drawn praise from NUT President Audu Titus-Amba, who called Kebbi a “second home” for teachers. Idris has been lauded for his focus on education but urged transparency in fund utilization, reflecting cautious optimism. The initiatives align with the state’s ₦580.32 billion 2025 budget, tagged “Budget of Economic and Infrastructural Consolidation,” which prioritizes education and infrastructure. Contracts for the school projects are set to be awarded within 30 days, signaling swift implementation to address dilapidated facilities and enhance learning environments.
