The Kebbi State Police Command has commenced a sweeping security operation across the state following a coordinated bandit attack that left 44 people dead in multiple communities within Shanga Local Government Area.
The tragic incident, which has sent shockwaves across the region, affected at least eight communities—Gebe, Kalkami, Kawara, Kasoshi, Awaye, Tungar Rini, Binuwa, and Dabe—all located in Shanga Local Government Area. Residents of these areas have been left grappling with the aftermath of violence that has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges facing parts of northern Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, the police confirmed that a comprehensive clearance operation had been launched in direct response to the attacks. The move, he explained, follows a directive from the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, mandating intensified efforts to combat banditry and restore order across the state.
According to Usman, the operation involves coordinated efforts among multiple security agencies, with a significant deployment of personnel and resources to the affected communities and surrounding areas. The aim, he said, is not only to track down those responsible for the killings but also to dismantle criminal networks operating within the region.
“The clearance operation is part of a broader strategy to prevent further attacks and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice,” the statement noted, emphasising the commitment of security forces to reclaim affected territories from armed groups.
In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, authorities moved swiftly to reinforce security presence in the area. Troops, police units, and other security operatives were deployed in large numbers, conducting patrols, surveillance, and search operations. These efforts, officials say, have helped to restore a measure of calm in the previously affected communities.
Residents, however, remain cautious.
For many survivors, the memory of the attacks carried out with deadly coordination remains fresh. Community leaders have called for sustained security presence and long-term measures to prevent a recurrence, stressing that temporary calm must not be mistaken for lasting peace.
Security analysts note that such clearance operations are crucial in disrupting the activities of bandits, who often exploit remote and under-policed areas to launch attacks.
