The Katsina Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State has launched a two-week campaign to eradicate open defecation across 290 communities.
Council Chairman, Alh. Isah Miqdad, disclosed this in Katsina on Wednesday while unveiling the initiative tagged “A New Chapter for Katsina LG”.
He said the initiative, designed to safeguard public health and restore community dignity, combines awareness, sensitisation, and sanitation activities.
According to him, more than 70 sanitation workers have been mobilised to identify open defecation sites, rehabilitate refuse dumps, and clean public spaces.
“Our goal is to secure certification from UNICEF and relevant agencies declaring Katsina LG Open Defecation Free (ODF). This is a rigorous process,” Miqdad stated.
He warned that open defecation fuels cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoea outbreaks, costing Nigeria an estimated 1.3 per cent of its annual GDP.
“This campaign is about changing habits and saving lives. It places dignity at the heart of our collective responsibility,” he emphasised.
The Chairman urged religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and youth organisations to drive awareness within communities.
“From mosque pulpits to community grounds, your voices will make the difference,” Miqdad appealed.
He added that the LG would strengthen community monitoring, sustain sanitation education, promote handwashing, and improve waste management services to prevent relapse.
Miqdad also acknowledged the state government and development partners for their technical and financial support in advancing water, sanitation, and hygiene programmes.
He stated: “Our vision is to make Katsina LG one of the cleanest and healthiest in the state.
“Every household must have safe sanitation. Every community must be free of open defecation. Every child must grow in an environment safe from preventable diseases.”
