The legal team of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s has called on the federal government to drop the terrorism charges against him or grant him bail so that he can prepare properly for his trial.

The team stated this yesterday during a press briefing in Abuja and described the condition their client was held at the Department of State Service (DSS) detention facility as very hostile.

Special Counsel to Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor urged President Bola Tinubu to either drop the charges or restore Kanu’s bail so that he can prepare properly for his trial.

“His continued detention at the DSS facility is not conducive as the environment is hostile and unfit for him to prepare for his defence,” Ejimakor said.

The lawyer also stated that Kanu’s frustration to the judge in his last court trial where he asked the trial judge to excuse herself from the case was because he felt his fundamental human rights to fair trial was being denied.

Another member of the team, Barrister Nnaemeka Ejiofor, said Kanu’s action wasn’t out of disrespect to the court but purely in exercise of his right as prescribed in the country’s constitution.

Barrister Jude Ugwanyi, a lawyer on the team, said the continued denial of Kanu’s bail is the reason why there is lack of peace in Nigeria in general and the south-east in particular.

He said due to the insecurity situation in the south-east, his junior brother, Samson Ugwanyi, a final year law student was brutally murdered.
