The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has pledged the full support of the Kano traditional council for any constitutional amendment position adopted by the state government in consultation with its citizens, as announced during the Kano State Stakeholders’ Dialogue on the 2025 Constitutional Amendment on July 24, 2025.
Speaking at the Government House in Kano, Sanusi emphasized the traditional institution’s commitment to endorsing decisions reflecting the people’s will, stating, “For us as Emirs, whatever the government, in consultation with the people, decides will be the position of Kano. We will endorse it 100%.” He also promised to review the amendment proposals and provide input by July 26, as reported.
The dialogue, aimed at fostering inclusive constitutional reforms, saw Sanusi commend Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for engaging stakeholders, a move he described as vital for capturing grassroots aspirations. The Emir urged other stakeholders to contribute suggestions to refine the amendment process, reinforcing the traditional council’s role as a unifying force in Kano’s governance.
This stance aligns with Sanusi’s history of advocating for systemic reforms, including reducing Nigeria’s high governance costs, as noted in his past critiques of bloated civil services and bicameral legislatures.
