Kano State Bureau of Statistics has announced plans to conduct a census of street beggars and child hawkers in the metropolis of the state
The state’s Statistician General, Aliyu Isa Aliyu, announced this during a meeting with stakeholders on the proposed survey, adding that the aim of the exercise was to improve the social and economic prosperity of the affected population
According to a statement by Saude Mukhtar, the Information Officer of the agency, the exercise would begin on December 28th.
She quoted the Statistician General as noting that obtaining statistics of street beggars and hawkers would be the first step to generating policies that would improve their lives.
He added that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had ordered this survey to be carried out in order to know the number of beggars and hawkers in Kano metropolis.
The Director General said the government is committed to improving their lives but that the efforts could not be achieved until their statistics were obtained.
He thanked the Governor for his continued support for the bureau and his commitment to statistics-driven governance.
The Director of Census and Survey Department, Auwalu explained the methodology of the survey and the areas to be captured.
