The Kano State Government has renamed two major sports institutions in memory of the 22 young athletes who tragically lost their lives in a road accident earlier this year. The victims were members of various local sports teams who were travelling to a competition when their vehicle was involved in a fatal crash along the Kano-Bauchi highway.

In a statement on Saturday, the Kano State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development announced that the Kano State Sports Institute in Karfi will now be known as the 22 Heroes Sports Institute, while the state’s athletic complex will be renamed the Legacy Arena. According to the commissioner, the gesture is aimed at immortalizing the late athletes and serving as a constant reminder of their dedication and sacrifice in service of the state.

The government also reiterated its commitment to improving the welfare and safety of young athletes, including better logistics, insurance, and training support. Families of the deceased were present at the renaming ceremony, where they received commendations and promises of further support from state officials.
