The policy decision was resolved at the end of the 21st executive council meeting of the Kano State government, which was held yesterday (Friday, November 29).
The university was named after the late renowned Nigerian diplomat and former Minister of External Affairs, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, by the Ganduje administration, following Alhaji Sule’s passing on July 3, 2017.
Naming the university after the deceased diplomat, political icon and traditional title holder was part of measures to honour him for his contributions to the state and the nation.
A statement by Sunusi A. Kofari Naisa, Public Relations Officer, State Ministry for Higher Education (MHE), however, explained that the State government has approved the establishment of a Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education and Advanced Studies in Ghari Local Government Area.
“The institution is modeled after existing colleges like Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Education in Tudun Wada and Mallam Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies,” the statement said.
“The new college is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing teacher training and advanced studies in the state,” it added.
To formalize these changes, the government directed that relevant bills be forwarded to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative endorsement.
In the meantime, the Executive Council has also approved the extension of the retirement age for professors in universities from 65 to 70 years, while academic staff in other higher institutions will now retire at 65 instead of 60.
This reform aims to enhance academic staff retention and continuity in higher education institutions.
