​The Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday suspended the chairmen of Bagwai, Bebeji, and Rogo Local Government Areas for three months over allegations of misconduct, financial misappropriation, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
​The official resolution was confirmed in an official press statement issued by Kamaluddeen Shawai, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House, at 6:57 PM on Tuesday following the conclusion of plenary proceedings at the Assembly Complex in Kano.
​The legislative action was taken during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore, following the adoption of a report presented by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, on behalf of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
​The affected council chairmen include Bello Abdullahi Gadanya (Bagwai LGA), Dr. Alhassan Salisu (Bebeji LGA) and Abubakar Mustapha (Rogo LGA).
​The committee’s findings stemmed from petitions submitted by local residents and municipal legislative councils, detailing several infractions. The Bagwai LGA; Evidence suggesting the misappropriation and diversion of funds intended for essential local development projects.
The Bebeji LGA; evidence showed persistent breach of due process in contract awards, unauthorized sale of local government land, diversion of funds, and coercing contractors to remit funds into private accounts.
Rogo LGA evidence revealed Non-compliance with administrative regulations, undermining government programs, and misappropriation of funds allocated for feeder road construction and rural electrification projects in Unguwar Dawa and Hausawa Fulani communities.
The Assembly ordered the Vice Chairmen of Bagwai, Bebeji, and Rogo LGAs to immediately take over administration in acting capacities to prevent leadership vacuums.
The suspension was executed under Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and Section 14 of the Kano State Local Government Law 2006.
The House mandated its committee to complete a detailed probe and present final recommendations within 10 weeks.
The Clerk of the Assembly was instructed to transmit the resolution to the Kano State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for immediate enforcement.
