Fuji music legend, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, has responded to critics questioning his decision to join the contest for the vacant stool of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.
K1, who last week formally declared his interest in succeeding the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona, said his aspiration is rooted in his commitment to the growth, unity, and cultural preservation of Ijebuland. He insisted that his decision was not driven by fame or personal ambition but by a deep sense of responsibility and service.
The renowned artiste explained that every qualified son of Ijebuland has the constitutional and traditional right to express interest in the stool, and that his involvement should not be misinterpreted as an attempt to politicize or sensationalize the revered position.
His declaration has stirred intense public debate, with some supporters applauding the move, while others questioned the suitability of a global music star for such a prestigious traditional role.
Before K1’s entry, the succession race had already drawn prominent contenders, including Olaseni Ottun, a 45-year-old prince from the Adeberu lineage of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, and Otunba Babatunde Alatise, a highly respected engineer and entrepreneur.
Despite the rising interest and competition, K1 urged the public to trust the selection process of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House and the kingmakers, who he said are capable of choosing the most qualified candidate for the throne.
He also appealed for calm among supporters of all aspirants, stating that the dignity of the Awujale stool must be preserved above personal sentiments.
The selection process continues as anticipation grows across Ijebuland for the announcement of the next Awujale.
