The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
The decision, reached during a plenary session on Thursday, February 19, 2026, follows a high-stakes intervention by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—marking the fourth such peace accord brokered by the Presidency to stabilize the oil-rich state.
The suspension of the impeachment process comes just weeks after the House, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had aggressively pursued the removal of the Governor. The lawmakers had cited “gross misconduct,” including unauthorized spending without legislative approval, and failure to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the recognized legislature.
However, the tide shifted following a marathon meeting in Abuja involving the President, Fubara, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Fubara, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), has publicly embraced a more conciliatory tone. At a recent awards ceremony in Lagos, the Governor described his recent concessions as a strategic choice for survival, rather than a sign of a lack of political will.
“I choose for a lot of reasons to be weak,” Fubara stated. “Weak, because I want peace. Weak, because we need to survive and protect what is dear to our nation.”
