The Convener of the Joorefade Initiative, Hon. Fatoki Abiodun Olumide, has criticised former U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments designating Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged Christian persecution.
In a statement released in Lagos, Fatoki said Trump’s claims were “unfounded and unfair,” adding that such remarks distort Nigeria’s complex security challenges and threaten its international reputation.

Hon. Fatoki defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s position, describing the U.S. designation as “a political misjudgment of Nigeria’s internal realities.”
“Nigeria remains a democracy guided by constitutional guarantees of religious freedom,” he said.
“Our government has consistently shown commitment to protecting citizens of all faiths, and the claim of persecution is not reflective of the true situation on the ground.”
He further urged the United States to adopt a more collaborative approach rather than making “statements that could destabilise diplomatic relations or fuel public tension.”

“We commend the Tinubu government for maintaining calm and professionalism,” Fatoki added.
“While the U.S. remains a key ally, Nigeria must never compromise its sovereignty or allow foreign narratives to undermine its stability.”
He also encouraged citizens to promote unity and avoid framing security challenges along religious lines.
Calls for Constructive Engagement
The Joorefade Initiative urged both nations to prioritise mutual respect and understanding in addressing global security and human rights concerns.
According to Fatoki, joint action against terrorism, poverty, and illiteracy would yield more sustainable outcomes than diplomatic confrontation.
“Our challenges are rooted in socio-economic issues, not religious intolerance,” he said.
“Collaboration between Nigeria and the United States should focus on strengthening governance, technology exchange, and counterterrorism capacity.”
