The Olukotun of Ikotun, a Kwara State community, Abdulrazaq Abioye, has charged sportsmen and women to not only think about winning but also the long-term effect that participation in sports would have on their lives.
Abioye gave the advice on Frida – yesterday, February 21 – in Ikotun after the final match of the football competition staged as part of the activities marking his 20 years on the throne.
The traditional ruler noted that thinking purely about winning breeds desperation.
“You will need to always show your talents at every stage, and also be disciplined and determined in doing so,” Abioye said, charging parents to support their female children to do sports.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ikotun United defeated Ultimate Football Club of Igbonna 2-0 in the final match of the competition which had 12 clubs participating.
Odo-Ode FC of Odo-Ode walked over Biola FC to win the third-place match.
The other teams in the competition included: AD Sporting FC, Kolawole FC, Ikotun Golden Boys, Aiyedaade FC, Alaro FC of Aboto, Ojoku FA of Ojomu and Young Boys FC of Offa.
Individual award winners in the competition included Saheed Agoro of Ikotun United (Best Goalkeeper) and Obafunwabi Israel of Ikotun United (Highest Goal Scorer) with 13 goals.
