The Nigerian Military has intensified operations against the emerging Lakurawa terrorist group in Sokoto State, deploying heavy reinforcements to Kebbe Local Government Area to fortify vulnerable border communities and halt further insurgent infiltration.

The fresh offensive, executed under the umbrella of Joint Task Force Northwest Operation Fansan Yamma, aims to clear out terrorist strongholds along the porous borderlines shared with Niger Republic.

Military troops, reinforced with ground motorized units and air support elements, began positioning along strategic entry routes early in the morning following localized intelligence reports. The deployment covers key communities across Kebbe Local Government Area—a primary zone of concern due to its dense forest tracks and proximity to regional border routes.

Speaking on behalf of the defense headquarters during an operational briefing at the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, reaffirmed the military’s resolve to dismantle the extremist network:

”Our troops are currently executing targeted clearance operations to hunt down Lakurawa elements, neutralize their operational capacity, and secure border communities in Sokoto and Kebbi states. We are leaving no stone unturned to safeguard lives and restore complete peace to the region.”

The Lakurawa group, an extremist faction with ties to Sahelian jihadist movements—has previously attempted to impose illegal levies, establish local control, and disrupt civilian livelihoods across border settlements in Sokoto and Kebbi.

To counter their tactics, the military has established advanced forward operating bases (FOBs) in Kebbe to maintain continuous surveillance and rapid response capabilities.

Sokoto State security officials have also assured residents that local intelligence networks are actively collaborating with troops. Colonel Ahmed Usman (retd.), Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Sokoto State Governor, stated:

”The Sokoto State Government is working in lockstep with the Nigerian Army and security agencies to supply intelligence and logistical support. The deployment in Kebbe sends a strong signal that our sovereign territory will not be ceded to criminal insurgents.”

With the strategic deployment in place, joint patrols continue along major transport corridors and rural border settlements to instill confidence among local communities. Security commanders have urged residents of Kebbe LGA and surrounding districts to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to the nearest military outposts as operations continue.
