Several public and private schools located in security-challenged areas of Niger State will remain closed, even as the state government has approved the reopening of schools in communities considered safe from January 12, 2026.
The Niger State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Hadiza Asabe Mohammed, disclosed this in a press statement on Saturday, explaining that only schools situated in areas assessed as safe and secure would be allowed to resume academic activities.
According to her, schools in communities still regarded as unsafe will remain shut until security agencies certify those areas as secure for teaching and learning.
Dr. Mohammed said the decision followed comprehensive security assessments and consultations with relevant security authorities, stressing that the safety of students, teachers and host communities remains the government’s top priority.
She noted that persistent insecurity in some parts of the state made it unsafe for normal academic activities to resume in all locations at the same time, adding that the state government would continue to monitor the situation closely.
The commissioner assured parents, guardians and school administrators that efforts are ongoing to restore peace to affected areas, promising that schools currently closed will be reopened immediately conditions improve and clearance is given by security agencies.
She urged stakeholders to cooperate with government directives and support measures aimed at ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment across the state.
