Amid festering insecurity in the state, Anambra Police Commissioner Nnaghe Obono Itam has been removed nine months after assuming office.
To replace the removed Anambra Police Command boss, Mr. Livingston Ikioye Urutuku has been deployed to take over as the new Police Commissioner for Anambra State .
The former Police Commissioner Aderemi Adeoye had retired from the force which led to the transfer of Itam as Commissioner to Anambra State.
On assumption of office in Anambra, Itam was faced with sustained security challenges as the rate of kidnapping, cultism and killings was on the increase.
Though it is not clear why he was removed, it may not be unconnected with the rise in crime and criminality in Anambra state, which would appear to have overwhelmed himr.
Deepening his situation is the recent take over of security operations in Anambra state by the newly launched Agunechemba Security Squad which has been effective less than three weeks of its establishment.
The worsening of the security situation in Anambra under Itam led to a human rights activist, Comrade Osita Obi calling for the transfer of the former CP.
The Police Service Commission’s decision is seen as a response to the growing security challenges in Anambra State under Itam.
“He didn’t police Anambra State well. One of the worst CPs in the history of the State. Under him Anambra witnessed the worst crime rate,” Comrade charged.
According to Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, the Commission Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu, has charged the new CP to settle down quickly and ensure there is no gap in law and order.
The new CP has also been tasked with dedicating himself to duty and assisting in freeing Nigeria from the menace of bandits and deviants.
The Commission’s decision has been conveyed to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation.
