FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Thursday stirred reactions during his address at the World Economic Forum after making a tongue-in-cheek remark about the behaviour of British football fans at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
According to Sky Sports News on Friday, Infantino was speaking before an audience of global leaders, policymakers and business executives when he reflected on the organisation of the Qatar tournament.
Looking back at the competition, the FIFA president said there were “virtually no incidents” once matches began, describing the event as largely peaceful despite widespread concerns ahead of the World Cup.
He then drew laughter and mixed reactions after highlighting what he termed a unique outcome from the tournament.
“For the first time in history, no Brit was arrested during a World Cup. Imagine! This is something really, really special,” Infantino said.
The comment, made in a light-hearted manner, quickly drew attention, with some interpreting it as a joke aimed at the long-standing reputation of British football hooliganism, while others viewed it as unnecessary or provocative.
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was widely noted for its heavy security presence and strict local laws, factors that FIFA officials have often credited for the low level of crowd disturbances recorded during the tournament.
