India and Ethiopia said that they are expanding their strategic partnership to include artificial intelligence (AI), science and innovation, alongside existing areas such as trade, investment and infrastructure.

India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, highlighted the expanded areas of cooperation during a visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Monday.

Jaishankar visited the Ethiopia Science Museum and the AI Institute in Addis Ababa, identifying technology and innovation as emerging areas of bilateral cooperation.

At the AI Institute, he said that India and Ethiopia shared the vision of “AI for All” and recognised its potential to promote development and prosperity.

The minister said that the strategic partnership between the two countries was founded on shared values, common aspirations and historic South-South solidarity.

He said the partnership’s agenda covered trade, investment, development projects, infrastructure, maritime affairs, technology and culture, as well as enhanced cooperation between India and the African Union.

Jaishankar also visited Ethiopia’s National Palace and Museum, highlighting opportunities for greater collaboration in heritage and culture.

He added that Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage and growing focus on science and technology offered additional opportunities for closer engagement between the two countries.
