We wish to address a crucial clarification regarding the recent reforms to admission requirements for tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Contrary to misinformation, the reforms do not imply that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) or JAMB is no longer required for university admission.
The reform focuses on adjusting O’Level entry requirements, specifically standardizing the minimum of five (5) O’Level credit passes in English Language and Mathematics across tertiary institutions.
Hence, UTME remains a prerequisite for university admission, with over two million candidates sitting for the examination annually.
The reforms therefore, aim to expand access, promote fairness, and standardize entry qualifications across institutions.
NOTABLE REFORMS:
A. Minimum of five (5) O’Level credit passes in English Language and Mathematics applies to all tertiary institutions.
B. National Innovation Diploma (NID) has been replaced with National Diploma (ND) for Innovation Enterprise Academies (IEAs).
C. National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) will re-accredit IEAs to align with new ND standards.
The Federal Government’s reform initiative aims to promote inclusive education, youth empowerment, and national development.
