Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State yesterday broke his silence over the ongoing impeachment proceedings against him by the State House of Assembly, offering a cryptic response that underscored the deepening political crisis in the state.
Speaking publicly on the matter for the first time, Fubara said some individuals “do not even understand why they bark,” a remark widely interpreted as a reference to lawmakers pushing for his removal.
While he did not mention names, the governor suggested that the impeachment moves were driven by forces lacking clear purpose or justification. Fubara maintained that he remained focused on governance and the welfare of Rivers people, insisting that distractions would not derail his administration’s commitment to peace and development.
His comments came on the same day his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reacted sharply to calls by some groups urging President Bola Tinubu to sack him from the Federal Executive Council.
Wike dismissed the calls as baseless, asserting that the President would only consider removing him if he no longer had value to offer the administration. According to him, President Tinubu is well-informed about his performance and contributions and does not act on sentiments or political noise.
The parallel remarks from both leaders have further highlighted the entrenched political divide in Rivers State, where the rift between former allies continues to fuel legislative tensions and public debate.
As impeachment threats persist and rival camps harden their positions, political observers warn that the crisis could deepen unless meaningful dialogue is pursued to restore stability in the state.
