The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC Corporation) has urged the Federal Government to view the recent comments attributed to U.S.
President Donald Trump on Nigeria’s security situation as a wake-up call for decisive leadership and international cooperation, rather than an assault on the nation’s reputation.
In a statement signed by Prof. h.c. Rafal Marcin Wasik, Secretary-General of the IHRC Corporation, the Commission stressed that Nigeria’s worsening security and humanitarian situation requires unity, responsible governance, and coordinated international action to avert further tragedy.
“The IHRC calls on the Nigerian government to treat President Trump’s comments not as an attack, but as a timely reminder of the urgent need for strategic reforms, transparency, and global partnership in addressing the nation’s security challenges,” the statement read.
Wasik noted that the scale of violence and instability in some parts of the country calls for a concerted response involving government institutions, civil society, and international allies.
“Nigeria’s current challenges transcend politics. What is needed now is leadership that prioritizes peace, human security, and collaboration with global partners to prevent deeper humanitarian crises,” he said.
The Commission also emphasized the need for accountability and proactive governance, urging Nigerian authorities to act swiftly in restoring confidence among citizens and demonstrating readiness to protect all communities regardless of religion or ethnicity.
According to the IHRC, international cooperation is essential to tackling terrorism, armed violence, and human rights violations that have displaced millions and strained regional stability.
“The world must not turn away, and Nigeria must not face this challenge alone,” Wasik added.
“Effective governance, backed by global engagement, can turn this moment of criticism into a platform for reform and progress.”
Trump had earlier claimed that “thousands and thousands” of Christians were being killed in Nigeria by radical Islamists, describing the situation as a “mass slaughter.” His comments have sparked widespread debate among global observers and Nigerian stakeholders.
The IHRC, however, maintained that rather than dismissing or politicizing the remarks, Nigeria should seize the moment to strengthen institutions, promote dialogue, and reaffirm its commitment to peace, human rights, and justice.
