In a major breakthrough for the family of late Afrobeats artist Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, widely known as Mohbad, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has officially approved a formal petition seeking a fresh and comprehensive probe into the unresolved circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

The directive was confirmed on Thursday, October 1, 2026, following months of sustained advocacy by the late musician’s family.

According to legal representatives for the Aloba family led by counsel Oladayo Ogungbe, the petition was submitted to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7, 2026, following an initial draft prepared on April 14, 2026.

Upon reviewing the petition, IGP Olatunji Disu instructed that the matter be immediately transferred from the Force Headquarters to the Lagos State Police Command for a renewed operational focus. The investigation has now been formally assigned to the Command’s Special Enquiry Bureau (SEB).

The Aloba family’s legal team confirmed that family representatives have already commenced engagement with police detectives attached to the specialized bureau to review key witness statements and physical evidence.

Speaking on behalf of the family, legal representative Oladayo Ogungbe emphasized the critical need for a painstaking and impartial inquiry.

”The family urged the police to conduct the investigation with utmost diligence, independence, and professionalism while thoroughly examining all relevant persons and circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s final hours,” Ogungbe stated.

Mohbad died under mysterious circumstances on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His sudden passing triggered widespread public outcry across Nigeria and the international music community, prompting initial police probes, coroner inquests, and the exhumation of his remains for autopsy.

Despite preliminary findings, lingering inconsistencies surrounding his final treatment, disputes over his estate, and unresolved questions regarding his relationship with his former record label sparked prolonged public interest and demands for a definitive investigation.

Confirming the latest development, police officials noted that the Special Enquiry Bureau in Lagos has officially opened files on the matter, with re-interrogations and evidence reviews scheduled to proceed immediately.

”The re-investigation is ongoing,” the legal team added in a joint statement. “The Aloba Family remains fully engaged. The pursuit of justice for Mohbad continues.”
