The Igbo Elders’ Consultative Forum has urged President Bola Tinubu to release detained leader of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as a condolence gift to the death of former President General, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who was a Tinubu supporter.
The Igbo elders made the demand during a condolence visit to the late Chief Iwuanyanwu family by the Ohaneze Ndigbo, the United States chapter.
The chairman, Igbo Elders’ Consultative Forum Chief Simon Okeke, who spoke on behalf of the elder statesmen, recalled that Chief Iwuanyanwu’s last visit to Abuja was to the facilities of the Department of State Services (DSS) to see Kanu.
Therefore, Okeke urged President Tinubu “to listen to the voice of the people and release Kanu to douse the tension and insecurity in the South East. Tinubu should listen to the voice of the dead and release Kanu,” Okeke appealed.
The Igbo leader, while extolling the achievements of Iwuanyanwu as Ohanaeze President General, thanked the Ohaneze Ndigbo US chapter, for commiserating with the Iwuanyanwu family, as well as promoting Igbo culture in America.
On his part, the President of Ohaneze in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV), and leader of the delegation, Dr. Hyacinth Nwachukwu stated that the chapter has written two letters to President Tinubu and to the Senate for Kanu’s release.
Nwachukwu, who noted that the late Iwuanyanwu gave Ndigbo in America a sense of belonging, pointed out that the IPOB leader’s release is a “burning issue not only at home but in the diaspora.”
He added that releasing Kanu will go a long way in addressing the security challenges currently bedeviling the South East, in the overall benefit of the country.
