Against the backdrop of preparations for the 2027 general elections, the Igbo Community Association in Abuja has issued a strong message to the Independent National Electoral Commission, insisting that the credibility of the next polls must not be compromised.
The association said the controversies, irregularities and alleged electoral malpractices that characterised the 2023 elections had eroded public confidence in the electoral process and warned that a repeat in 2027 would be unacceptable.
In a statement jointly signed by its President General, Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, and the Secretary General, Emmanuel Onah, the group noted that Nigerians were now more politically aware, organised and determined to defend their votes.
According to the association, voters would no longer remain passive observers in the face of vote manipulation or electoral fraud, stressing that citizens were ready to resist any attempt to undermine their collective will.
The group further urged INEC to be more deliberate and transparent in the deployment of funds allocated for election-related activities, adding that the substantial budgetary provisions must translate into improved logistics, technology and personnel efficiency.
The Igbo Community Association emphasised that credible elections remain the foundation of democracy and appealed to INEC to restore public trust by ensuring that the 2027 polls are free, fair and reflective of the true choice of the people.
