Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), popularly known as IBB, today, August 17, marked his 84th birthday, drawing widespread tributes from political leaders, associates, and admirers across Nigeria.
Babangida, who governed Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, remains one of the most influential figures in the country’s political history. Born in Minna, Niger State, on August 17, 1941, he joined the Nigerian Army in 1962 and rose through the ranks before becoming Head of State following a palace coup that ousted General Muhammadu Buhari.
At his Hilltop residence in Minna, family members, close friends, and political associates gathered to celebrate the milestone. Messages from across the nation described the retired general as a leader who contributed to the shaping of Nigeria’s political and economic landscape, particularly through his Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), creation of new states, and moves towards a civilian democratic order.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a goodwill message, described IBB as “a statesman whose place in Nigeria’s history cannot be forgotten,” noting that his birthday serves as a reminder of the sacrifices of past leaders. Former President Goodluck Jonathan, in his tribute, praised Babangida’s enduring role as a mentor to younger politicians and his ability to maintain relevance decades after leaving office.
In Niger State, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago led government officials in honoring the former leader, describing him as “a son of the soil who placed Niger State on the map of global recognition.”
IBB, fondly referred to as the “Maradona” of Nigerian politics for his tactical maneuverings, continues to inspire debates over his legacy. While some hail his courage in navigating the country through turbulent times, others remain critical of his annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely considered Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll.
At 84, Babangida is said to be in good health and surrounded by his children and grandchildren. In a short remark, he expressed gratitude to God for life and to Nigerians for their goodwill, urging unity, peace, and patience as the nation works towards overcoming its challenges.
“Every generation faces its trials,” he said. “But I believe Nigeria will always rise above them and remain one indivisible nation.”
As IBB clocks 84, the Hilltop mansion once again becomes a symbol of reflection on Nigeria’s past, its journey, and the leaders who shaped its destiny.
