Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF), North East Operation HADIN KAI, have rescued 74 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who were stranded along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Borno State.
According to a military report, the incident occurred around 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday when three buses conveying the corps members broke down near a forested area notorious for Boko Haram activity.
The troops, who detected the movement of the vehicles through a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system, swiftly dispatched a patrol team to the scene. Upon arrival, they found 74 corps members—36 males and 38 females—stranded due to mechanical faults.
The soldiers secured the area, rescued the corps members, and prevented what could have been a terrorist abduction attempt.
Preliminary findings showed that the corps members were earlier escorted from Maiduguri to Damaturu by troops of the 7 Division Garrison. However, they reportedly continued their journey to Hawul Local Government Area without notifying Sector 2 Headquarters or obtaining armed escort from security agencies.
The rescued corps members have since been evacuated and are being sheltered at the Buratai Military Base, pending arrangements for their safe relocation.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians and maintaining a robust security presence across the North East. It also urged the public to continue cooperating with security personnel to enhance peace and security in the region.
