Drama and intense political maneuvering have hit the House of Representatives following a major split in the minority caucus. Sixty-one opposition lawmakers have openly declared their support for Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere to succeed Hon. Kingsley Chinda as the new Minority Leader. ​
The sudden shift comes in the wake of Chinda’s high-profile resignation from the leadership seat and his subsequent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas formally declared the minority leadership seat vacant during Tuesday’s plenary session. ​Wasting no time, a formidable bloc within the opposition moved swiftly to fill the vacuum.
By Wednesday, 61 out of the 81 members making up the minority caucus had signed a joint nomination letter, officially presenting Ugochinyere, a prominent opposition voice representing the Ideato North/South Federal Constituency as the Minority Leader-designate to the Speaker.
The overwhelming endorsement has effectively fractured the opposition alliance, catchng the remaining caucus members off guard and triggering intense debates behind closed doors. While Ugochinyere’s backers argue his aggressive oversight style is exactly what the opposition needs to hold the executive accountable, critics within the split caucus warn that the swift move could deepen divisions at a critical legislative juncture. ​
