Nollywood achieved a major milestone on Saturday, September 26, 2026, as 51,000 qualifying viewers gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos to break the Guinness World Record for the largest audience gathering at a single-location movie screening.

The historic event featured the premiere of the crime thriller Black Market. Organizers originally aimed to reach 50,000 attendees, successfully surpassing the previous record of 43,624 set on October 4, 2015, during the premiere of the film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena in Ciudad de Victoria, Philippines.

Gates at the historic 50,000-capacity arena opened at 2:00 PM WAT, drawing crowds from across the state that filled the entrance precincts and nearby access roads. The event featured interactive fan zones, red-carpet sessions, live music, and vendor booths before the main presentation.

The featured film, Black Market; directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and produced through a collaboration involving Rixel Studios, Signet Ring Studios, Switch Visuals, and FilmOne Studios, tells the story of five market women drawn into a cross-border smuggling network amid fuel scarcity and economic distress. The feature began at 7:00 PM WAT on a massive outdoor screen setup.

While overall venue entry reached higher total foot traffic, Guinness World Records adjudicators calculated the official tally based strictly on attendees who remained in their seats from start to finish.

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, who attended alongside Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture Toke Benson-Awoyinka, addressed the audience to highlight the state’s support for the local creative economy.

”Lagos State has once again proven to be the culture and entertainment hub of Africa,” Hamzat stated during his address. “Seeing tens of thousands of citizens gather peacefully to celebrate local storytelling showcases the scale and economic power of our film industry.”

Co-producer and star Omowunmi Dada addressed the gathering following the official verification announcement:

”Our goal with Black Market was to create a shared, communal cinematic experience that reflects the strength of our people,” said Dada. “Setting a world record with over 51,000 people at TBS proves the undeniable reach and passion of Nollywood audiences.”

Distribution partner FilmOne Studios formally acknowledged the outcome in a joint public statement shortly after the screening concluded. “51,000+ people. One screen. One moment that just made history,” the distributor confirmed.

The official record confirmation concluded with fireworks over Tafawa Balewa Square as Black Market prepares for its nationwide theatrical release.
