Renowned Nigerian highlife musician and folklorist, Mike Ejeagha, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 95. He died at 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged 16-year battle with prostate cancer. His eldest son, Emmanuel Ejeagha, confirmed the news, stating that his father’s health had deteriorated significantly in recent weeks.
Born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Ejeagha was celebrated for his unique style of Igbo folk music, which seamlessly blended traditional proverbs and storytelling. His contributions to preserving and promoting Igbo culture through music are monumental, with over 300 recordings archived in the National Archives of Nigeria.
Ejeagha’s legacy experienced a resurgence in 2024 when his 1983 classic, “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche,” gained renewed attention through a viral dance challenge initiated by comedian Brain Jotter. This brought his music to a new generation, reaffirming his status as a cultural icon.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah expressed deep sorrow over Ejeagha’s passing, describing him as a “legend, cultural ambassador, and revered son of Enugu State.” The governor assured that the state government would take steps to immortalize the late musician’s legacy.
