The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called for comprehensive reforms in the country’s health sector in 2026, citing persistent challenges that undermined healthcare delivery in 2025.
In a year-end review, the Lagos State Chairman of the association, Dr. Saheed Babajide Kehinde, highlighted what he described as “highly unfortunate, unacceptable and disappointing” lapses in the sector over the past year.
According to the NMA, the health sector in 2025 suffered from weak policy focus, ongoing workforce crises, and inadequate financing, all of which have continued to compromise the quality and accessibility of healthcare services nationwide.
Dr. Kehinde stressed that without urgent and all-round reforms, the sector would struggle to meet the healthcare needs of Nigerians. He urged the Federal Government to prioritise strategic interventions, strengthen workforce capacity, and ensure sustainable funding to improve service delivery.
“The lapses recorded in 2025 are clear indicators that our health system requires decisive action and structural reforms in the coming year,” he said, noting that stakeholders must collaborate to ensure the sector can provide quality care to all Nigerians.
The NMA’s call comes amid growing concerns over access to healthcare and the persistent challenges facing public hospitals and medical professionals across the country.
