A new political alliance between the National Councillors Forum of Nigeria and the City Boys Movement has thrown its weight behind the anticipated 2027 re-election bid of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, signalling what supporters describe as a major mobilisation effort at the grassroots level across the country.
The partnership was announced during a weekend gathering held in the South-East, where leaders of the councillors’ forum declared their readiness to rally local government representatives and community structures nationwide to support the President’s second-term ambition.
Speaking at the event, the President of the forum, Evoh Okechukwu Nwikegwu, said councillors across Nigeria were strategically positioned to play a decisive role in voter mobilisation ahead of the next general elections.
According to him, Nigeria’s estimated 8,809 councillors represent the closest elected officials to citizens at the grassroots, making them critical actors in political organisation and democratic participation.
Nwikegwu explained that through their extensive local networks, councillors would coordinate mobilisation efforts across the country’s more than 176,000 polling units to help secure what he described as a decisive victory for the President in the 2027 election.
He noted that councillors maintain direct engagement with communities, grassroots organisations and local political structures, giving them the ability to effectively communicate government policies and rally support during elections.
“As the closest representatives to the people at the grassroots, councillors remain the vanguards of development and democratic participation,” Nwikegwu said during his address.
He emphasised that the forum’s collaboration with the City Boys Movement, a youth-oriented political group led by Seyi Tinubu, would further strengthen mobilisation efforts, particularly among young voters.
According to him, the combination of grassroots political representatives and youth-based mobilisation structures could create a formidable support base capable of influencing voter turnout across multiple regions of the country.
Nwikegwu described the partnership as a strategic move aimed at consolidating political support for the Tinubu administration while also encouraging greater participation in governance at the local level.
